I began appreciating music at a very early age. The first instrument I picked up was a violin. I had lessons and became so accomplished that I played the solo at a school concert when I was 8. Then it all turned sour. I fell out with my best mate – we’ll call him Alan. I told him he must be gay as he’d joined the Cubs. His not very original but equally lambasted response was that I must be gay because I played the violin.

My violin never saw the light of day again. I soon found solace in the acoustic guitar. My stepdad had one and he taught me such shanties as ‘What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor’ and ‘Michael Row The Boat Ashore’ I used to play it left handed. Then Mum divorced him and he took the damn guitar with him.
